In a Hurry?
-----------
Are you in a hurry to edit your Fido's menus and menu privileges? If so,
copy MENU.COM to the directory where your FIDO_???.EXE is and run MENU.COM.
MENU is self documenting.
If you have never edited your Fido's menu privileges before, MENU will
tell you if you first have to run Fido's Sysop 3 command. Just log on as
Sysop, and go to each menu that MENU tells you to go to (File:, Msg:, CHANGE:,
etc.) and type 3. Then log off and run MENU again.
Introduction
------------
You can customize your Fido by editing the text that is printed by Help
level 2. For instance your Fido may print its Main: menu like this:
MAIN Commands:
M)sg-Section F)ile-Section G)oodbye
S)tatistics A)ns-Questionaire B)ulletin
Y)ell C)hange U)ser-List E)ditorial
V)ersion O)utside
Main: M F G S A B Y C U E V O or ? for help:
But using MENU you can edit the command names to look like this:
MAIN Commands:
Messages, Files,
Goodbye, Statistics,
Answer Questions, Bulletin,
Yell, Change,
User-List, Editorial,
Version, Outside
Main: M F G S A B Y C U E V O or ? for help:
or perhaps this
MAIN Commands:
M = Messages, F = Files,
G = Goodbye, S = Statistics,
A = Ans-Question, B = Bulletin,
Y = Yell, C = Change,
U = User-List, E = Editorial,
V = Version, O = Outside
Main: M F G S A B Y C U E V O or ? for help:
You can even change the names of commands (though not their meaning) to
make your Fido easier to use. For instance you can rename the "E)ditorial"
command to "E)xtra-Help"; the normal .HLP files can give quick reference
information that is only one screen long, and E)xtra-Help can have more
extensive tutorial information on how to use Fido.
You may change your Fido's command names to anything you want, with two
restrictions:
- The new name must begin with the same letter as the old name.
- The new name can have no more than 19 characters.
MENU usually does not change the first letter of a command name, but you
can instruct it to do so if you wish to experiment.
Using MENU
----------
MENU 3.1 edits the six Fido menu-privilege files (MAINPRIV.BBS, FILEPRIV.BBS,
MSGPRIV.BBS, READPRIV.BBS, CHGPRIV.BBS, and MAILPRIV.BBS). These files are
created by Fido with the Sysop 3 command. If they don't exist in your Fido
directory, run Fido, log on as Sysop, and go to each directory and type the
3 command.
MENU does not create menu-privilege files because they are different sizes
for different versions of Fido. Fido 11t creates a MAINPRIV.BBS file that is
572 bytes long, but Fido 11v creates a MAINPRIV.BBS that is 264 bytes long.
MENU 3.1 works with any size of privilege files and has been tested with files
from Fido versions 11q, 11t, 11v, and 11w.
To edit a pre-existing menu file,
1. Start MENU and use the arrow keys to select the menu you wish to edit.
Then press <ENTER>.
2. MENU will display the selected menu. For example, selecting Main Menu
gives:
MENU 3.1 <INSERT> | Fido Menu-File Editor

Can't find ???PRIV.BBS
----------------------
If MENU gives this error message, use Fido to create the missing file.
You must exit MENU, log on to your Fido as Sysop, and run the 3 command from
the menu whose privilege file MENU couldn't find:
If MENU gives this message Run Sysop's 3 command from this menu

Graphics Characters
-------------------
If you want your Fido's menus to print IBM graphics characters, you can
enter them with the Ctrl-V command. Type Ctrl-V followed by the graphics
character you want to enter.
Example 1: Enter a happy face.
According the the IBM-PC BASIC Reference, Appendix D. ASCII Character
Codes, the happy face character has an ASCII value of 001.
1. Type Ctrl-V.
2. Hold down the <Alt> key,
3. type 001 on the numeric keypad,
4. and release the <Alt> key.
Example 2: Enter a centered dot.
Appendix D of IBM BASIC Reference shows the centered dot has ASCII
value 249.
1. Type Ctrl-V.
2. Hold down the <Alt> key,
3. type 249 on the numeric keypad,
4. and release the <Alt> key.
Any graphics characters may be entered in this way with only a few exceptions.
Do not use graphics characters with values 8, 9, or 27 since these are ASCII
control characters, and not graphics characters. (8 is Backspace, 9 is Tab,
and 27 is Escape.)
